The fifty-six Pickwickians who made their way to Lucy and Tom Brakspear’s glorious garden setting for the Association’s annual Cream Tea Party were glad to find it slightly cooler than had been of late – cooler but perfectly sunny and summery.
The brainchild of the then Association secretary Lorraine Vaun-Davis, this event, now in its sixth consecutive year, continues to gain in popularity, with attendances growing steadily upwards. It was lovely to see Lorraine back among us for the afternoon having made the trip from her new home in South Somerset.
Tables were generously loaned by the Town Council (thanks to some effective pleading by Cllr. Ruth Hopkinson), and were stylishly set – table-cloths, napkins and fine bone china at every seat – to create an elegant setting in which guests could relax and enjoy the surroundings, the company and a first class afternoon tea.
The variety, quality and quantity of all the home-made scones (with lashings of clotted cream and choice of jams of course!) was second to none. Tea was carried to tables in fine china pots by members of the organising team (Lucy B, Jacquie J and Christine B) and several helpers – too many to name (apart that is from 13-year old Emma who, with great charm and skill, managed an outstanding waitressing job…. before leading the folding and carrying of tables & chairs in the clear-up).
There were twenty-one generously-donated raffle prizes for the after-tea ‘entertainment’ that enabled Dianna (T) to relieve attendees of an impressive £223 that, added to ticket sales and donations totalling £468 means that the Association added almost £700 to its funds.
As can be seen from the pictures, the atmosphere and the fare on offer, as described at the time was “English, rural, sociable and peaceful” and was very clearly appreciated by everyone who attended. Roll on next year!
